8 Places to Celebrate Oktoberfest in San Diego
Where to chug a stein and chow on a bratwurst if you can make it to Munich.
The German tradition, Oktoberfest, kicks off in September, and what better way to start off fall than with a beer in hand at one of San Diego's celebrations? Whether you're looking to capture aesthetic fall photos or need an excuse to day drink in a different neighborhood, these eight celebrations will have you feeling German for the day.
1. Crafttoberfest at Liberty Public Market
September 22nd to October 1st
No Oktoberfest is complete without beer, obviously. Crafttoberfest at Liberty Public Market made this their entire personality, offering everything from hoppy IPAs to rich stouts and German Lagers; there’s no shortage of brews. After trying a few old favorites or maybe a new discovery, you can test your beer knowledge at Beer Trivia and Bingo. Finally, for those looking to relive the varsity athlete days, head over to Beerlympics and see if your athletic abilities can push through all the beers in your stomach.
2. Oktoberfest in Encinitas
Sept 24th
Encinitas doesn’t mess around when it comes to celebrating its German roots. In addition to the inevitable beer garden, this street fair showcases authentic Bavarian music and dance troupes. I don’t know about you, but I love drinks and a show. When hunger strikes, head to the international food court, and after, check out the carnival rides. Don’t overeat before hitting the rides; however, we all know how that ends.
3. El Cajon Oktoberfest
September 29th - October 1st and October 6-8th
Foodies, make sure to wear your stretchiest pants. El Cajon’s Oktoberfest is the German food mecca: bratwurst, ox-on-the-spit, potato salad, potato pancakes, sauerkraut, red cabbage, pretzels, and a variety of German pastries can be found at this two-weekend bonanza. While soft drinks and water are always an option, you know we’ll be washing down these eats with German beers and liquors.
4. La Mesa Oktoberfest
Sept 29th-Oct 1st
La Mesa wins for the most family-friendly Oktoberfest party. While the parents enjoy three different beirgartens, kids can hit the playground or play the carnival games. And don’t worry, we didn’t forget about the dog's parents. La Mesa Oktoberfest features Dackeldorf Dachshund Village, where weiner dogs can race, and any breed can waltz down the runway for a fashion show or hang in the grass. Just don’t forget your furry friend’s leash.
5. East Village Oktoberfest
Sept 30th
East Village shows the influence of German culture on our beloved Mexican lager. It’s a more contemporary twist on the traditional Oktoberfest. As expected, you can find a variety of classic craft beers, soft pretzels, and sausages. We’re looking forward to the polka music blasting through the courtyard and the games to keep us entertained all night.
6. Ocean Beach Oktoberfest
Oct 6-7th
Ocean Beach knows how to throw a party. This is the wildest Oktoberfest on our roundup. OB doesn’t mess around in the bar department, offering German and local beers, wine, and spirits. If you’re looking to catch a buzz and listen to live music near the ocean, aka Oktoberfest the California way, OB's the destination.
7. Julian Oktoberfest
Oct 7th
Julian serves up the most authentic and traditional feeling of Oktoberfest. San Diego doesn’t have crazy changes in seasons, but up in Julian, the leaves will be changing, the weather crisp, and St. Elizabeth’s will be creating one heck of an Oktoberfest. You can make a whole day out of Oktoberfest in Julian. Watch performers, play bingo, sip and paint, or test your luck in the silent auction or raffle. And, of course, like any exceptional Oktoberfest, there will be great German food and plenty of beverages in the beer garden.
8. Carlsbad Oktoberfest
Oct 7th
Last but certainly not least, Carlsbad blasts German music through the streets and serves authentic German meals from Tip Top Meats. This is another family-friendly venture with kids' activities and a Bier Garten for the adults. If beer isn’t your jam, they’ll also serve up various wines. This Oktoberfest doesn’t skimp on the events: chicken dance-off, wiener toss, and trivia are only a few of the scheduled activities on the agenda.
